How a shift starts
The whole pre-drive flow happens on the Shift tab. From there:
- Drag the green Swipe to Start Shift slider all the way across.
- Approve the Notifications permission if Fleet Go asks for it.
- The QR scanner opens. Point your camera at the vehicle's QR code, or tap Select manually to pick the vehicle from a list filtered by VIN or plate.
- The Vehicle Inspection screen confirms the make, model, year and lists the six photos you're about to take. Tap Start Inspection to open the camera.
The six photos, in this exact order
Fleet Go advances through the photos one at a time. The big banner at the top of the camera tells you which side is next, with the step number ("Step 3 of 6").
| # | Position | What to capture |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Dashboard | Odometer reading and any warning lights, framed clearly |
| 2 | Left Side | Full length of the van from the driver's side |
| 3 | Front | Bumper, headlights, windshield |
| 4 | Right Side | Full length from the passenger's side |
| 5 | Back | Rear bumper, tail lights, cargo doors |
| 6 | Cargo area | Interior of the cargo space, doors open |
How to capture each photo
- Tap the white circular shutter at the bottom of the screen. The shutter fires immediately — there is no automatic blur or motion lock, so steady the phone yourself before you tap.
- The captured image fills the screen with two buttons at the bottom: Retake (outlined) and Confirm (green). Take a moment to check focus, framing, and that you actually got the right side of the van.
- Tap Confirm to keep the shot and advance to the next photo. On the sixth shot the green button reads Finish instead of Confirm — tapping it sends you to the inspection notes step.
A small strip of thumbnails sits above the shutter showing every photo you've already accepted, so you always know how many are done.
Take photos in good light when possible. Early morning and late afternoon shadows can make damage hard to spot at review. If you're in a dark depot, turn on the van's lights or use the depot lighting before tapping the shutter.
Fleet Go does not currently auto-detect blur or motion. If a photo looks soft on the preview, tap Retake before confirming — once you confirm, it goes into the strip and your dispatcher will see exactly that frame in the photo review queue. See Troubleshooting & FAQ if the camera won't initialize.
Inspection notes
After the sixth photo, the Inspection Notes screen appears:
- A free-text field for any issue you noticed during the walk-around.
- A No issues found checkbox. You must either type something in the notes or tick the checkbox before the green Start Shift button activates.
- Tapping Start Shift uploads the photos and notes, starts the shift timer, and drops you back on the Shift tab in active state.
Why the 6-photo inspection matters
These six photos are your proof of the vehicle's condition when you received it. If damage is discovered later, the inspection set determines whether it happened on your shift or was already there. A thorough, clear set of photos protects you from being held responsible for damage you didn't cause.
For your organization, consistent inspections across all drivers create a continuous visual history of every vehicle. This data helps catch problems early, speeds up insurance claims, and demonstrates compliance during audits.
Tips for better photos
- Walk the full circuit every time, even if you're in a rush. Skipping a side is where damage gets missed.
- Step back far enough to capture the entire side of the vehicle in one shot. Close-ups of specific damage belong in incident reports, not inspections.
- Check for obstructions — other vehicles, walls, or equipment blocking the camera's view of the vehicle surface. Move the vehicle if needed.
- Dashboard photo: tilt the phone to avoid glare on the instrument cluster, and make sure the odometer reading is sharp.
- Cargo area: open both doors fully before shooting. The photo should show the floor and walls of the cargo space.
After you submit
Once the photos and notes are accepted, you're on shift. See On the road during your shift for what Fleet Go does in the background. If you spot damage that wasn't there at the start, report it as an incident before driving off. At the depot you'll close out with the end-shift checklist.
